Animals Lebanon closes down zoo

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

After a month of negotiating with the owner, Animals Lebanon was finally able to close down one of the worst zoos in Lebanon and give the animals the care they so desperately need.  On Friday, 13 February, we rescued nearly 40 animals.

We need your help now to care for these animals.  They all need a place to live - whether in a sanctuary, rehabilitated and returned to nature, or adopted into homes – vet care and proper food.

Warning – Knowing how negative and violent so much media is, we usually try not to show pictures or video footage that is too disturbing.  However, in this case the reality can only be understood through the video.

Check back next week to see the video and pictures of the day of the rescue and the animals in their new conditions.

Please click here to donate now and give these animals the future they deserve.

Below is the personal experience of the Animals Lebanon rescuer who first visited the zoo.

On one side of the road there are restaurants, entertainment centers, and shopping malls.  Unaware of what lies just across the street, people are laughing and happy.  On the other side of the road hangs a dilapidated sign with faded letters that reads ‘zoo.’  Inside are dozens of animals cramped into rusty cages, surrounded by their own feces, and suffering from hunger, thirst, and boredom.

I passed this road hundreds of times and but never noticed the zoo.  It was by chance I glimpsed the faded zoo signboard and decided to park and check it out. As I entered I was taken aback by the pungent smells of rotting food, filthy animals, and feces.  Soon I had to wave my arms to push away the swarms of flies surrounding me. They were everywhere – in the air, in the rot, it was impossible to move away from them.

At first I said to myself there is no way that animals live here – that this may have been a zoo, but must have been abandoned years ago.  It was only as I ventured deeper inside that I was dismayed to find that this small piece of land was full of rundown cages – and inside them, animals of all sorts: bears, jackals, monkey, turtles, a vulture, porcupines and so many others.

I have, in my life as an animal rescuer, encountered horrific sights – but this was by far one of the most heart wrenching scenes I have ever come across.

The animals were starving, their bodies were emaciated. There were no food bowls, only rusted tins from which the animals are supposed to drink water. In most of the cages, the water had dried up a while ago, in others it had been left unchanged for so long that algae was taking over.

The animals looked broken. It was clear that they were simply existing, waiting to die just to stop the suffering.

I have no words to describe what I have just seen, and all the rest I have seen in Lebanon (+ many other places) and on your website. What I can say is that I feel so lucky to have met you guys. You are such an example, completely devoted. You are what we call hope. I hope you get as much support as possible. You already have achieved so much, and I know much more is to come. And this is what feels good about life. Thank you for standing by these marvellous creatures. We will always give you all the help in our power. L'union fait la force, and we need to believe this.

Thank you so much for rescuing those poor animals. I cry for the innocent helpless animals who end up in horrible places like that zoo. Thank god it was closed down. Thank you so much for caring enough to do something about it.

I have mixed feeling about this video, i feel both pain because of all what these animals had pass through, and hope because ppl like u exist in Lebanon.
Good work guys on closing this zoo, i hope that the pets get adopted by loving and caring ppl, i hope that wild animals can be sent to other zoos or sanctuary abroad or in lebanon if they are or were once native to our lands (like the brown syriacus bear).

How very, very sad. All zoos should be shut down all over the world. There's no reason for them, except to exploit animals for profit, which didn't work in this horrid case anyway. Although no animals belong in zoos, why were dogs, including that poor starving dog who died and had a COLLAR on, in a zoo? Are dogs rare in Lebanon? I'm thankful that Animals Lebanon shut this place of torture and suffering down.

I live in Naccache, a few minutes away from Dbayeh and I have never heard of this zoo.
The condition shown in the video is horrifying.
I would love to help, but I am unable to adopt animals. How can I help?

Until the Lebanese people learn to respect animals, they will never respect themselves; otherwise, they would never have allowed these animals to suffer.
The "educational content" is not in the frayed and rotting notices posted at cages but in the way in which these animals have been abused.
I wish I could put the abusive owners of this "zoo" in cages without food, water, space and let them suffer indefinately. . .
How can I send funds to Animals Lebanon and be assured they are received?

couldn't finish watching this video, i swear it could be used in a horror movie, i am sure that if ever seen by PETA org , there would be serious consequences concerning the way those people have been treating those animals, i understand that, the financial situations wouldn't help to maintain such a zoo , so why bother those animals by treating them so bad?... who said that we want to look at animals suffering greatly, i'd rather use the internet to see pictures of those animals, instead of watching them suffer behind bars! it is morally unacceptable to treat animals the way those people did.
i am glad it has been closed!

I am so sad to see all these horrors. I am glad to see you reacting and rescuing these poor animals. Nothing justifies this cruelty and the persons responsible for their agony need to be judged in courts. We are also trying to be active here in Algeria and I think that it is extremely important to make the legislative bodies work and vote for a strong law to protect animal rights in Lebanon. I support all your actions towards a better respect for animals wherever they are. I wish you all the best in continuing your mission

I am not surprised, things are going down the drain in Lebanon.
I lived 32 years in Beyrouth, left 13 years ago, but I read L'Orient-Le Jour every morning, and I see that superficial things are doing well, but what about the rest of the population, and of course our animals..
Our animals have more common sense and love, we should learn from them.
SHAME on the owners of that zoo, they should be in jail and may be treated like this poor animals.
Great job, I will be in Lebanon in October, and would like to contact you.
I need your phone number or address
Thank you very much for the great job you are doing.

This is almost as bad as the zoo in Nigeria. The only difference being in Nigeria there were many many more exotic animals, all starving to death (i believe the one elephant they had died of starvation, and 2 of the lions did as well). The animals in this video do look broken.d It would be wonderful if you could post the new living conditions of these animals, and the sort of care they're being given.

Good work, i hope that the awareness keeps on growing in this country. If the lebanese people learn to respect animals, then they can finally learn to have respect for their country and fellow people!

peace!

What a sad sight to behold. You hsve done a wonderful job rescuing these poor animals alas too late for the poor dog that died of starvation of love and food. I hope these animals now get the cared for life that they deserve. I will be donating to this very worthy cause. What a great team you are, the rescuers of these poor animals.

We feel sorry for the animals and how they were abandoned. We thought it was very sad that the dog's bones were showing. We think it's too bad that the animals can't be freed, but we understand that the animals would have to be trained to survive in the wild.

We hope this won't ever happen again in Lebanon or anywhere else.

Were the owners of this zoo arrested for inhumane care of these animals??? I only wonder since there are no laws in this country protecting animals of any kind. Thak God for A.L. and thier services. God Bless you all.

There are no words to describe what i felt after watching this horrible, video, something should be done urgently for the remaining animals who have suffered ,the owners should be severely punished for what suffering they have caused to these poor animals. This is simply unacceptable.God Bless all the animals .

Great job A.L.!!!!!!! I would like to add that i do not think it is a good idea to return any of the rescued animals to there natural habitats.... they have already lost their drive to hunt and rehab will not do...

always at your disposal...

Dear Deedee,

We too are extremely saddened that we were not able to rescue the dog before he died. We tried nearly every way we could think of to get all of these animals as soon as we became aware of this zoo, every animal there was starving. Unfortunately it took us two visits just to determine who owned the zoo. There are no real laws which should prevent this from happening, or correct it when it does happen. On our very first visit we tried to get the dog and other animals, but worker refused to give them up. Being on private property, we have no right to simply take an animal which is being abused. The dog's image will haunt me forever...

I hope the owners are punished the same way these poor, innocent creatures have been tortured. I have a lot of cats that are like my kids and they are spoiled rotten. In return, I get unconditional love and joy having them in my life. I pray that you are able to bring some happiness and love to these animals! God Bless.

What I want to know is -- and I'm very angry over this -- is WHY was the videographer filming over more than one visit LEAVING the starving dog to die? Why wasn't something done when the starving dog was first seen?

Although I've watched this footage several of times, I still cry. Seeing these beautiful creatures suffer so much at the hands of people who simply lack the respect/education and fail to give the animals the basic essentials to survive, food, water, attention, adequate space, yearly shots, etc.. is so HORRIBLE AND UNACCEPTABLE. Zoo's should be BANNED all over the world. Also seeing that dear dog so emaciated (which could have been prevented) broke my heart so very much. God bless his soul. My heart also goes out to the other dear animals who looked so very miserable/sad/bored/hungry. I am so very happy/joyful knowing that AL took this drastic move. What would we have done without you AL TEAM. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and compassion for these voiceless beautiful creatures. Excellent rescue :):):) I will donate right now hoping that the funds will help you with the feeding of the rescued animals. Good luck my friends with finding new homes for the rest of the animals. God bless you all.
