Ban the use of animals in circuses

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Early Christmas morning we were alerted to a shipment of lions and tigers that were on their way to Lebanon as part of a circus.  Coming overland from Egypt, they had been without food for days as they crossed into Jordan, finally reaching Lebanon two days later.  The Princess Alia Foundation worked to ensure the animals were given food and treated humanely while they were driven across Jordan.

As documents and information started to come in, we realized this was a circus which has been investigated for more than 15 years for the smuggling and abuse of animals.  Ten years earlier all the animals of the Akef circus were confiscated in Mozambique as they had been abandoned and began to starve.

After a torturous week long trip in dilapidated containers, the animals were forced to perform less than 24 hours after they reached the circus.  Malika, the female lion cub, had been declawed two weeks earlier while she was still in Egypt.  Circus owners never gave her the time to heal from this outdated and cruel practice, and her paws remain raw and infected.

A two week investigation headed by Animals Lebanon led to Minister of Agriculture Dr. Hussein Hajj Hassan declaring the circus animals entered Lebanon illegally.  The Ministers decision, issued 8 January, gave the circus owners only days to move all nine lions and tigers from Lebanon.

The landmark decision is a strong stance against animal smuggling, and since Tuesday the circus has been shut down.  Lebanese law does not give a way to confiscate these lions and tigers, but the Minister welcomed working with Animals Lebanon to enact laws to prevent this from ever happening again.

If you love animals then join us in stopping to circus abuse in Lebanon and SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGN to ban the use of animals in circuses.  Many circus animals are subjected to cruel and abusive treatment as they are forced to perform, only to then be locked in small cages.  More and more countries begin to ban the use of animals in circuses - your support now will help make sure Lebanon is added to this list.

YOUR DONATION NOW will help make sure animals like Mary the lion cub never have to suffer again.

Talk is cheap, we need serious people that are aware of the magnitude of this problem starting with saving animals and recognizing their rights to live and, exist along our side, earth is not for us alone, Im not just talking about only saving animals but also saving their ecosystem, unfortunately we cant work on that alone and alone I mean us the people, yet we do not need extraterrestrial help! This problem can be dealt with We need to let our voices be heard we need to start pointing fingers at the government asking: What have you done for such a major issue?! Not just major but Critical and crucial and by all means the most important.

Awarness is the key,
School children instead of being brought in buses to unhealthy zoos around the country, should be told about the importance of respecting these animals, and more importantly preserving their habitats.

Humans think that earth belongs to them and only them, and have the right to do whatever they can since they are the most dominant specie, although Im not a passionate religious person but I realize that after our time is over everyone will get what he bargained for in this life especially if one strives on others misery, animals cant fight their battles with humans which is a really an unfair fight, We must help not just animals but nature in all.

Well i am happy to hear those news, and i hope on top of banning the animals' abuse in circus, more efforts will be done as well to stop the criminals who are killing, hunting and kidnaping for the purpose of selling the few wild animals still available in our mountains. Maybe more education to the new generation should be done on how to treat and respect animals in general...way to go guys, i am sure it's not easy to achieve such a thing in a short period in Lebanon, many people are ready to support and i am one of them.

I wonder if any of those who posted comments here have ever thought of what they have everyday in their plates to eat..
Meat, fish, Foie Gras,..
All animal food we eat is poison.
The animal, when slaughtered, releases stress hormones and poisonous substances that enter our body afterwards.
Wana help animals? Start from your next meal!
Also, i wish we could stand up and shout out loud with the same passion when any of our neighbours/fellow citizens are starving and treated even worse than animals.. in prisons or camps.

Peace.

Animals are vulnerable, and don't know how to defend themselves when those monsters who look like humans exploit them in circuses and hurt them, it is our duty to do whatever we can to protect them, this can be done through laws with severe punishments, and by raising the public awareness. Not only in circuses, you see cats and dogs on the streets, some people treat them harshly, this shoes that we are the fake luxurious, throw-away-society, and among us many are animal abusers and all other crimes which mostly go unpunished. For once, let us stop this.

Animals don't complaint, and we should understand they have soul, and they can suffer from stress from a brutal misbehavior treatment.
I believe these animals are suffering from all kind of mistreatment, and the partners or the owners of this fake circus should trade places with the animals for a few days and feel what are these animals are suffering.
The only place for these animals is their homelands were they belong, let them have their freedom, due they are endangered animals and we should give them a decent life.
All my support for all of you...

Before saving Animals let's save poor Lebanese People who suffers a lot more than this circus lions ... First come the Humans and Second the Animals. Lebanon is like this circus you are talking about and the people are like these lions they suffers from our politicians and regime... So why not a website named People Lebanon instead of this website dedicated for bloody animals who love human flesh and blood.

Animals are living souls , created by GOD, and deserve to be treated with care and respect. In fact in most ways, they are more purer souls than humans, in that they have no malicious intent, their actions are based on survival. Lebanon is years if not decades behind on the animal treatment front. I can barely stop tears when I see some of the pet shops that operate here. Dirty cages, so small... a dog can barely stand up fully, probably preventing his growth. infectuin, disease. Cages cramped with different types of animals. We are also behind in education and social developmemnt. There are many times where I am out and see a group of children abusing a cat or kitten, throwing stones at it and laughing, while a parent watches on and says nothing!!!! (at which point, my usband interferes to get them to stop)We need to educate people, and children in school about animals.

it's great to know that we're finally entering the civilization; but it's still not enough because those people who are treating the animals this way should be punished because they are criminals ... animals are like the humans: they have feelings & they get hurt (physically & spiritually & mentally) even though they are not smart as the humans.
Animals kill to eat & survive ... what's our excuse??

Sunday, January 17, 2010 12:04 PM

Dear all,
First i want to congratulate you for the effort that you've been doing. It's sad that we live in a country that even don't recognize the human rights, imagine how it will treat it's animals. I had the opportunity to watch a small part of the interview at NTV, it wasn't chocking because i know how we lebanese are outdated and cruel. A person that misstreat an animal is a person beyond description, you can't describe his personality. The declawed cub is just a small example of what's goin on, Lebanes hit dogs and cats with there cars on purpose, a dog who doesn't perform well in hunting is shot by it's owner, we treat animals as if they don't feel the pain, knowing that for example dogs even have emotional pain i'm sure you heard about dogs that died after their ownersdid, and so on...
I encourage you to keep on your effort, your message and actions should be known by everyone until we reache a day where we can even sue people for abusing animals...
Sincerely,,, Tony

Reading these negative comments from the Lebanese people is very uplifting!!! Animals People, the Minister of Agriculture, and many more other Lebanese people who were adamant about having this so-called circus shipped out/closed down is a sign that the owner(s) was NOT WELCOMED to perform (abuse) these beautiful/majestic animals!!

I hope/pray that the owner(s) will cease to operate this so-called circus and quit dealing with animals simply because he/they do not have a clue about how to treat/respect animals and put his/their energy towards something that will benefit/profit the children/poor/old/sick of his/their country!!!!

THANKS A MILLION ANIMALS LEBANON FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE WHENEVER NEEDED.

In order to show you my appreciation, I shall donate some funds hopefully to help with some of the expenses.....

Saturday, January 16, 2010 4:11 PM

It's a disgusting thing they're doing... People never sit and think what horrible things are being done to poor and innocent animals that should be in the wild. I'm extremely proud to know that Lebanon has acted against this cruelty. De-clawing is absolutely inhumane.... It's likened to cutting off the tips of human fingers to the first knuckle! I'm glad to know some Lebanese actually care about the proper treatment of animals. I for one am a huge animal lover, and despise the silly and mundane acts circuses force these wild animals to do. It's slavery in the animal world. Dogs are different, they're domesticated and enjoy work and training; it's instilled in their instincts to please humans and enjoy praise as return. But wild animals are not domesticated, and need to be free!

I love Lebanon, and I love it even more now after knowing about what it's doing to counter these horrible acts.

Keep up the good work, you have a lot of our support. I can speak for the students of AUB when I tell you, great job! :)

Samer, Lebanon
